 Description:

A precipitation hardenable nickel alloy. Because the major alloy elements are molybdenum, niobium + tantalum, aluminium and titanium, the alloy has a combination of high strength and good corrosion resistance when the alloy is precipitation hardened. Alloy 718 gives exceptionally high yield, good corrosion resistance, tensile and creep rupture properties at temperatures up to 700°C (1300°F).

Alloy 718 can either be vacuum induction melted (VIM) followed by vacuum arc remelting (VAR) or electro-slag remelted (ESR), or electric arc melted, argon oxygen degassed (AOD) followed by double VAR. Heat treatment varies according to the application (aerospace material requires maximum strength for operation at high temperature whereas material destined for oil and gas applications is limited to a maximum hardness of 40HRC in order to ensure it is resistant to stress corrosion cracking).

Alloy 718 can be annealed and welded without spontaneous hardening during heating and cooling, and has excellent weldability compared to other nickel-based superalloys hardened by aluminium and titanium.
