A nickel copper alloy. The alloy has moderate strength, and is weldable and resistant to seawater corrosion, especially in situations where erosion resistance is necessary. Alloy 400 is resistant to sulphuric acid (in solutions in concentrations to 80%), in de-aerated hydrochloric (in solutions in concentrations to 20%)and hydrofluoric acids, most alkalis, salts and saline solutions, food and organic substances. However use of Alloy 400 in oxidising conditions is not recommended. At normal room temperatures Alloy 400 is slightly magnetic.
Alloy 400 can be hot worked in the temperature range 650-11750C, and although best results are obtained when working above 9000C, best microstructure is obtained when the final reduction is at the lower end of the forging range.
Alloy 400 is normally stocked in the annealed condition.
